Glass for all purposes

Glass for all purposes

Nowadays there is a vast selection of glass types for all purposes.

  • Low E glass
  • Windows with DGU (double glazed units)
  • Coupled windows
  • Float glass
  • Glass with sound reduction
  • Solar reflective glass
  • Structural glass/patterned glass and leaded light

Low E glass

Low-emissivity glass (or Low E as it is commonly referred to)is a type of energy efficient glass designed to prevent heat escaping through your windows to the cold outdoors.

Low E glass has an invisible coating which dramatically reduces heat transfer and reflects interior heat back into your room.

The heat loss for glass is measured in U-value. The lower the U-value the better the insulation.

DGU (double glazed units)

Years ago ordinary DGU windows had a U-value of 3.0. Today we only supply Energy rated A windows consisting of DGU’s with Low E and warm edge where the U-value can be as low as 1.2. However the smaller the glass panes ie where Georgian bars are used the higher the U-value.

Coupled windows

Coupled windows where the outer pane is 3mm float glass and a single pane with Low E on the inside, has a U-value of 1.7 (this however is only used on properties which are in conservation areas).

Coupled windows are therefore more commonly supplied with a DGU Low E in the internal casement and a single glass pane in the exterior frame. This system achieves a U-value of 1.2 and is known as Trio Wood.

Unpolished glass

When it comes to properties which are listed or in conservation areas, you can choose unpolished glass. Unpolished glass has not been polished like the modern float glass and all imperfections are still in the glass, like air bubbles and will retain the character, quaintness of the old windows.

An alternative is to restore the old glass.

Sound reduction

To achieve a better sound reduction we recommend a suitable glass combination for this. By increasing the thickness of the glass – using acoustic laminated panes or adjusting the size of the cavities between the glass, will break the sound waves. Thus reducing sound.

Solar control

If you wish to minimise the sun’s solar energy entering the room, you can choose from a variety of solar controlled glass.  The glass is slightly tinted.

We have a range of textured and decorative glass which can provide privacy or create a design statement.
